Rituals
My practice is based on the ritual of wandering. Whether isolated in the woods or being deeply invested in a drawing, I allow myself to become lost in the process. I draw my subjects from direct observation. I also use photography, which allows me to retrieve my subjects and bring them to my studio as a reference. Drawing in this manner is both a wandering and a search for stillness, a translation and distillation of place into an accumulation of marks. This becomes a ritual, drawing my subjects nearer through a slow and meticulous contemplation which is a combination of direct observation, photographic reference, and imagined elements. I transport my subjects from their reality to a surface in my studio. I prove my devotion as they evolve again, and I lose myself in a fabricated reality.
